Lily’s Deceptively Generous Inside Pockets Keep You Organized
by admin — 8 Comments » Lazies, Let’s take a closer look at Lily’s inside pockets today. For such a seemingly small bag, the Lily Pocket Purse (LGD128) is surprisingly roomy and organized. Here’s a peek inside Lily, loaded with some of my purse-ables. In the far left pocket is my non-coordinating Wonder Wallet, then a pen pocket in the middle, and a small bottle of hand lotion to the right. But this picture really doesn’t tell the whole story.
Below is a view of the inside pockets and lining during construction. The pocket panel finishes to about 10″ wide, give or take a few threads. For comparison, that’s just an inch narrower than a sheet of letter sized paper (copier or printer paper) turned sideways or landscape at 11″. That’s a sizable amount of room.
The Wonder Wallet pocket is a generous 5″ wide. Not bad for a ‘small’ purse. The phone or camera pocket is 4″ wide – pretty nice. And finally, there’s a skinny pen pocket in the middle, where it’s handy.
Stitching’s Ulterior Motive
You can divide things up any way you like. One of the benefits of the pen pocket in the middle is that the two lines of stitching actually add a bit of stand-up-i-tude, or structure, to the back wall of the bag. Each line of stitching is functional and adds to the overall structure of the bag. Vertical lines add stand-up-i-tude. Horizontal lines support the silhouette, like a hoop in a hoop dress. The horizontal and vertical lines work together for overall structure.
Pocket Depth
Finished depth on the pockets is right around 5″. Now, when I say that, it really doesn’t seem deep. But it’s deep enough to lose a pen. The average length of the ball point pens, pencils and markers on my desk (yes I measured) is 5 1/4″. So, I stitched across the bottom of the pen pocket to make it shallower and perfect for my pens.
Regardless of what I plan to use your inside pockets for, I like the flexibility of having different size pockets, so I lean toward one being wider than the other, and I like a pocket just for my pens.

My Lily just got back from vacation and we had a great time together! I loved the hands free feeling with Lily’s longer strap worn across my body and she holds so much for a little girl! My wonder wallet, phone, camera, sunglasses, husband’s sunglasses (!) and a little notebook all fit in there beautifully. I too love a special pocket for my pen, so much better than having them migrate to the bottom of my bag.
I love your patterns! Whenever I get to the pocket stage I use your measurements for pockets, mostly because I don’t want to take the time to figure it out., and they are always perfect for me. I cleaned out my Miranda purse while visiting family at a camp ground…they were amazed at how much stuff I had in that bag. My family’s favorite line is ‘ask mom’ she’s probably got it in her purse! sad thing is…I usually do. Need to make the Lily so I can downsize if I need too! Thanks again for all your patterns!
I know I’m a little late on the comments, but I made up this pattern this weekend, and I loved your pattern! It’s my first Lazy design that I’ve actually made (so many nice patterns that I’ve admired for a long time), and was so impressed by the clear and detailed instructions and photos. Wonderful!
