Lazies, Welcome to the first of twelve daily features in the ‘Day Z Dozen’ blog hop. All of the projects included in the hop use the ‘DayZ Deux’ fabric from LakeHouse Dry Goods. Today’s project is ‘Ring Around The Flowers’ quilt by Holly Holderman, owner of LakeHouse Dry Goods.

Here’s Holly:
I began creating with fabric before I could reach the foot pedal of a sewing machine. I glued and pinned fabric swatches that my mother gave me into sari-like garments. Then I traipsed around the neighborhood, like a little gypsy.
While in junior high, shirts and dresses with little patterned fabrics for the cuffs, collar, ect. really caught my eye. This was the beginning of my love of mixing many types of fabrics together. Is it any wonder that soon thereafter I developed a love for old patchwork quilts? I love how the different colors and prints of these fabrics work together to create drama.
The inspiration for the daisy part of the ‘DayZ’ collection was a combination of my love of the Gerber daisy, my fascination with circles and one of my favorite quilt designs, the New York Beauty. But the precision, time, and patience it takes to make a New York Beauty quilt, while appealing to so many, is out of the question to all but the most experienced quilters.
Living In Manhattan, I walk a lot. One day I am walking up Broadway and wham-o, a jewelry store has fabric daisies the size of dinner plates in the window.
My eyes bulge, my heart races, I open the door to the store and rush in… ‘Sir, How much is that daisy in the window?’ And it all came together right there on Broadway and 85th, walking down the street minding my own business.
With the ‘DayZ’ collection, you can easily achieve the circular design elements and intricacy of the New York Beauty facets, using straight seams. No need for curved piecing. The flowers do all the work for you.

There are so many ways you can sew the flowers together into blocks.
For ‘Ring Around The Flowers’, simply cut the flowers into quarters, then mix and match pairs with different backgrounds, and sew them back together.

I love the daisy quilt. I’ve been intrigued with that flower fabric myself and the mind races with design ideas, but this is better than any I’ve thought of so far. Great job!
Holly the quilt is fabulous! Love the story, although the only thing I think got at 85th & Broadway was an urge to buy something not make something, it is so good you could push that shopping thought out & come up with that wonderful quilt. Can’t wait for the patterns to come in! This is going to be a great adventure! Keep those creative thoughts coming & I will keep the shopping ones in my head!

[...] This is the first day of Joan’s blog hop, too… featuring a quilt design by Holly, the creative mind behind LakeHouse Dry Goods and the cool daisy fabric. I’m really loving that fabric! [...]
[...] The DayZ Dozen Blog Hop started yesterday over at Lazy Girl Designs. Yesterday’s pattern was “Ring Around the Flowers Quilt,” by Holly Holderman, the creator of the fabric design, and owner of LakeHouse Dry Goods. Part of her motivation in creating the fabric was the desire to incorporate circles in her quilts. Circles are tough! But not when they are part of the fabric design. Another aspect of her quilt pattern that I like is the way the flower colors coordinate. She pieces 2 different-colored flowers for each flower motif in the pattern, and the 2-color pairs look great together. Do I really need to say how much I like the Bright Colors? And the black to set them off? I love Holly’s color sense. [...]
Holly,
SUPER-DUPER-AWESOME!!!! The DayZ flowers are so wonderful with all of their bright colors and by mixing them with your black & white fabrics…well….you made them more wonderful still…if that was possible!
But I guess it was because you did it! (Hey…is there such a word as DUPER? There should be!)
I have really enjoyed working with Holly in designing projects for this great fabric and look forward to more in the future. It has just tons of possibilities and I’m sure that quilters everywhere are so glad that you were inspired on Broadway and 85th street. I know I am. Keep up the GREAT work!!!!!
