Giveaway: It’s Time for Summer, Our Summer Tote
Lazies, One of our all-time best selling bag designs has a fresh face. The Summer Tote is a handy and functional bag with an unconventional construction. We were the first in the industry to fuse two layers of cotton fabric together to make what we call quilter’s canvas. Summer uses no batting, is lightweight, and still has nice structure to stand upright.
Our cover sample was made by Julie Herman of Jaybird Quilts. Shown here in ‘Stitch’ from Robert Kaufman. Julie wanted a bag and I needed a new cover model – thanks Julie!
What is going on with the pockets at the side seam? They don’t match up. And they are not supposed to.
Here’s a great side view of Summer. I love this shape. It reminds me of a bowling ball bag.
Summer is a Work Horse
The back pocket is deeper or taller than the front pocket. It offers one wide pocket perfect for a magazine or file folder. A shorter pocket in the front, with several divisions, really makes the outside of Summer totally functional.
Add a little zip – literally – to your Summer Tote by choosing a zipper color that compliments your project. Here, a rich brown is perfect with the Stitch line of fabrics. And that zipper pull is really a scissor fob. The bead is a mood bead, changing color much like a mood ring. It will change between blue and green, matching all the colors in this project perfectly. Nice!

as well as the simple construction below.
Since two fabrics are fused together to create a single new fabric, you could easily substitute pre-quilted fabric or a heavier upholstery fabric for the cover pieces.
I highly recommend Steam A Seam 2 for the fusible. It’s available in a 20″ width on a roll. Smaller pieces are available, but you don’t really want to piece, overlap, or abut the fusible. It will create a lump or a weak spot. Erica’s carries the Steam A Seam I recommend here, (scroll down once there).

I, too, really like this bag. I can see many uses for it.
Our daughter is a school teacher and this would be perfect to carry her stuff back and forth.

Oh My..this bag is awesome. I have 7 grand-daughters and have been looking for the perfect totebag to make for them. I have made some smaller bags with the 2 layer tecnique using “Heat and Bond”. It makes them very sturdy.

What a clever idea, to add beads or scissors fob to the zipper pull. With all of the jewelry making notions in craft stores these days, making an individual zipper pull could be the easiest and LAZIEST project on the beach.
How cute! Such a neat idea to fuse the fabrics together, I make more bags then anything, this is one I will have to put on my list. I think I love the hunt for just the right fabric combo for each purse as I do the construction of the actual purse. I can see this done as any season and add some embroidery or bling and it would be a work of art. Love, Love it!
My summer tote is one of my favorite bags. Of course I use it all year long,. I’ve use the bag as carry-on luggage and am able to bring my book, change of clothes, meds.etc and it fits right under the seat. I’ve used Joan’s method of fusing the materials together on other bags and love the finished product..

I am fairly new to making totes and have made 14 or 15 in the last couple months (totes and fabric totes). Just found Lazy Girl Designs! My challenge to myself is to repurpose….every bag I’ve made has been repurposed from clothing or fabric remnants from a thrift shop and using buttons & embellishments I already have…I’ve only purchased thread and interfacing. The structure of the garment lends a lot to the style or pattern (or pattern I make up). I love it! Thanks for this site!

I just made my first Lazys… 2 Runarounds and 2 medium Suzis as storage baskets. The patterns were clear and easy to follow. The Summer Tote looks great. I need a new tote to take to conferences, and the Summer would do the job nicely.

i LOVE the Summer Tote. I have made several. One Christmas, I made one for each person in my sewing circle. I used the same fabrics for all in a couple of colorways. I varied the fabric used for pockets and/or cover fabric so that each of the bags was unique. When the circle goes on a “field trip,” i.e., a quilt show or fabric store, we each carry our bag and get lots of comments.

This is a really workable idea. I discovered this fusing about 20 yrs. ago by accident before the newer, softer fusibles were introduced. Thanks for helping me find something to do with all my stuff that was too stiff for my dishtowels.

We carry this pattern in my shop and have very good results with it – I made a sample when it first came out and then made a couple more for my own use. I have taught the class a couple of times and customers are really excited when they find out how easy it is to make a great bag!

I love the summer tote. It is made so well is all of your purses/totes. It looks like lots of rooms inside. I also love the material that was choosen. It all cordinates so well.
I love the fact that the pockets are a little different, just like me.
I would make this to carry my bible, confession book and note pade to church , it would have enough room and also my wallet.

In one of your posts you talked about the scan codes. I have many of your patterns and am always on the look out for material to make one. BUT I can never remember how much fabric to buy. How about a link or site, to patterns requirements, something I could access from my smart phone. With maybe a small picture, because I get the names mixed up.

I really like the idea of fusing the 2 cottons together for structure. and the different size pockets on the outside add interest to the bag. Love the pattern!!

I like the roominess of it, and since I inevitably travel with a small needlework project (usually attached in a separate bag), this would have enough room to carry what I need !
It looks perfect to carry my current applique project in. Most of the bags I’ve found are too small for the project as it grows and the pockets all around can be used to carry my tools! What a beautiful new cover girl, too.
Love this tote! Julie did a fantastic job on your cover version. I like that the outer pockets offer storage for large and small items. Can’t have enough storage, and this tote looks like it fits the bill!
Love the bag, but must admit the fact that the fabric on the side doesn’t match really bothers me. But then that’s the great thing about making something yourself. I can make it the way I love it!

This is very elegant looking. I’m new to the bag “scene”, and I’ve always had problems with zippers. I’ll bet your directions are easy to follow from I’ve read. I looked at your other bag patterns and they all look equally as delightful.

Seems to be a very functional bag.
One thing I always add to my bags is a loop with at spilt ring on it. I have a hook on my keychain, and secure the keys to my bag when I get out of the car…sure makes it easier to find those keys!

I love this tote, and especially like the zipper. So many totes are open without a zipper. The zipper keeps items secure in the tote, in case it tips over. Great job on this pattern and would love to be able to win the pattern.

This is a great summer tote! Really like having the zipper so everythng stays inside. Have like all the Lazy Girl bag patterns.
In the summer I carry more than winter – sunblock, sunglasses, etc. A new bag sized just right would be perfect! My favorite feature is the zipper on top. Nothing will fall out! Maybe I need a matching sunhat, too.

This bag looks like it would be perfect for my daughter to use for her organ music and shoes. Girly and practical just like my girl. It will look great next to her while she plays the organ at church.
Very attractive. I think I would do French seams to avoid the unfinished look inside and perhaps add horizontal welting to separate the two fabrics.

I love the summer tote! I’ve probably made 10+ of this pattern. Sometimes I change it up a bit, but for the most part follow the pattern. I love it’s versitility and ease of use. My friends think it makes a great diaper bag.

Love this bag pattern, and it’s nice & roomy. Made the Towne purse for my daughter and she absolutely loves it. But this pattern seems better for me because I put just about everything in my purse. Well except for the old kitchen sink cause it’s makes any purse a tad bit too heavy.

I love this pattern! I have made two of these in previous summers and still use them a lot. They are great for travelling on a plane, lightweight yet everything is zipped in and you’re less likely to lose things.

I like bags that are noticed when I walk down the street. Friday I get a french braid done at the local Beauty School. When I walk down the street people stop me to comment on my hair. NIOW they stop me for my hair but also to comment on the purse or bag I am using that day. THIS bag would cause lots of compliments. I love the new look!! The Summer Tote pattern is 1 of only 3 of the Lazy Girl bag patterns that I don’t have. That’s only because I haven’t gotten around to ordering it yet. I loooooove Lazy Girl bag patterns. They are so stylish and easy to make. Every time I make one for someone they always ask me to make them another one (or two).
Love a bag or purse with a zipper as it keeps all the important stuff tucked in. The Summer will hold plenty of stuff safely in it’s pockets and inside so it is a must do.
I love this bag design. I made it in my perfect fabric/colors a couple of years ago. It was one of my go-to bags. It’s so versatile. Unfortunately, my daughter has discovered it and I haven’t seen it empty recently.

I like this bag (and all Lazy Girl bags) and am looking forward to making it to replace my worn out Coach bag. Your patterns are easy to follow and are flexible….I could make a different bag for each day of the week if I wanted…just need to have appropriate material on hand.
I want to make me one! Gave the first one away to my hair-cutter friend and she told me it is perfect for all her supplies when she goes to another location than the shop to do wedding parties. So you can imagine how much it holds!
That’s what I need to make for my oldest daughter. I made her a Miranda day bag a couple of years ago and she stuffs it so full she has almost worn it out. This would give her more room for her things.

Made a similar one using desert camo for hubs to carry meds, etc when working out-of-town. Last thing I sewed, as I can no longer see to read or sew. Would love to use this pattern (enlarged) to make him a new (better) one..

I have yet to make one of your bags, and am looking for an over-the-shoulder style. I keep reading that these are really so easy, but I’ve never tried anything like this and find putting in a zipper very intimidating. Which purse is the most simple to make?

Love the fabric combination! I love to have my totes handy, not just for summer fun, but for every day use. When going to my favorite sewing place – I carry my totes and fill it with wonderful goodies. When I get home it is always a treat to open my tote and start creating!

A zippered tote is essential for me with lots of pockets. The Summer Tote certainly fits the bill and I especially like the pull tabs for easy access.

Oh I love that tote! Nice and roomy – no scrounging through a roomy top and narrow bottom. Plus a zip! I prefer zip tops to keep things private. Also like the look of those funky mismatched pockets. They suit my quirky style.

I made this in a very wild print, and I love it. I really like the way the zipper is applied. I find your patterns very easy to make, however I did have to make my sides even, just couldn’t handle them not matching at the sides, so my outside pockets are the same size. I want to adapt the pattern to a smaller size for a purse.

I absolutely love the summer tote..have made them for everyone and my friends who travel say it’s the best carry-on purse they’ve ever had. Mostly because it has pockets on the outside for their tickets and book and phone so they don’t have to dig around inside when they’re standing in line. And because there are pockets inside for other detritus we all seem to carry. BUT I’m wondering if there’s a way to make it a bit smaller. I have one for a carry-on but, being only 5′ tall and 110 lbs. I would like one a little smaller for every-day use. Maybe 2 inches less across and up&down. Anyone know how I’d scale it down?
