Amy Barickman: Ready for Spring with Vintage Notions
Our Guest Blogger series continues today with Amy Barickman of Indygo Junction.
As I write this, winter is holding on for dear life in my home city of Kansas City (it was just 70 degrees and now there’s a 1/2 inch of snow). I have decided, however, that I am going to ignore the short term chill and officially pronounce that Spring is Here. So, since it’s Spring, I’d like to share with you three of my favorite flower projects to get every Lazy Girl in a Spring mood.

Vintage Fabric Flower
The first project is a Fabric Flower “magic pattern” from my latest book, Vintage Notions.
Vintage Notions takes much of its inspiration from the newsletter produced by the Woman’s Institute of Scranton, PA. This remarkable school taught dressmaking via correspondence courses and newsletters to over 300,000 women in the 1920s and ‘30s. A popular feature was always the “Magic Pattern.” These clever and timeless patterns were so simple to make, they seemed like “magic.”
The “magic” continued when a student realized no paper patterns were required, as cutting your pieces was based solely on diagrams and measurements. In the April section of the book, we feature the Fabric Flower Magic Pattern. It is one of those accessories that, once you’ve made one, you’ll be making others in different sizes and colors.
As you can see in the pictures above, I’m quite fond of the ones I’ve made.
Magic Pattern for the Fabric Flower
When you start this project, here are three simple reminders (from the Magic Pattern Notes found in the back of Vintage Notions):
1. Use a circle pattern/template to draw the circle.
2. Cut the fabric circles using a rotary circle cutter.
3. To wear it, use a purchased pin-back stitched to the flower back.

Keep in mind Vintage Notions offers a “magic pattern” for each month of the year. From aprons to a summer purse– timeless styles that are ever so practical.
Flowers, Flowers, Flowers!
At Indygo Junction, we love flowers. Two of our projects that are beautiful and extremely easy to make are Floribunda and Petaluma, each one containing five floral brooch designs inspired by vintage corsages and hat trimmings.
Flowers and Zippers
Finally, I’d like to share one of our newer patterns that’s inspired by the popular trend of using zippers in accessories. My Garden Zips uses recycled zippers – or new Zipper Accents yardage – to create a garden of attractive flower brooches.

Vintage Notions sounds great. Need to try the fabric flowers. Sound like fun gifts. I recently made a bag that used a zipper and I had bought an over sized zipper. I saved the cut off pieces when I shortened it. Don’t know why I saved them, but now I do-flowers made from zippers!

Love the looks of the flowers. They would be a milleners delight when hats were in fashion. HMMMMM, maybe something to decorate sun hats with now.
Now I have a project to make with all those zippers I’ve been reclaiming from plastic bags. My Grandaughters were making bracelets out of plastic bottles and 2 1/2″ strips – this might be a great rosette to add to the bracelet. Thanks so much for the inspiration.

When I moved to PA 14 years ago, I was “adopted” by an elderly lady in my new church. Among other things, she shared her years of sewing experience with me. She had a whole collection of Women’s Institute patterns. We had so much fun looking through those patterns! Thanks for the opportunity to think about Gayle and how she helped me through a tough transition.

This post brought back fond childhood memories for me – My mother used to take white carnations from her garden and place them in a vase with blue food coloring and they would “magically” turn blue! That’s what your blue flowers look like!
Ms. Barickman has so many wonderful ideas! What I love the most is how she is helping to keep the traditions of the past alive. With all the technology that bombards us in our daily life it is so relaxing to just sit and make beautiful thinkgs with our hands.

I’m a Lazie. a vintage sewer by age, an am teaching my niece the vintage way of sewing for good basic sewing habits, like finish what you have started. You will learn by seeing your mistakes. But I also know with 4 small children. her time is limited and she used shortcuts..
I love the flowers because she makes hair clips for each of her little girls outfits.

Would live to add you book to my book collection as well as your florial patters to my pattern stash too. Already have some of your other patterns in same, next to my LGD patterns. The flowers look like they’d make great gifts to be added to my box with hand made gifts in it. Winning these would make this vintage 70 year older very, very happy. Having enjoyed creating purses and bags with both Lazy Girl and Indygo Junction patterns, I can see why Amy was the guest blogger! Recently saw Amy on TV when my local PBS station aired Sewing with Nancy. You brought this book to Nancy’s Corner! While I’m not much on “vintage” styles, your book did pique my interest and I firmly believe that sometimes the older method is better.

Indygo Junction ideas are endless. It’s my Candyland. For years, I’ve used zippers as a piping. I always buy extra long zippers so I can have leftovers. Bringing back the flowers worn on hats is great. I’d like a fashionable, ie. not floppy, hat pattern also, so elegant. Moms’ just didn’t make it past the dressup stage!

Anything vintage is right up my alley! The use of zippers is ingenious! I would like to add a flower to a purse I made! The folks at work look forward to each new season to see what homemade purse I will come in with! Won’t the flower addition on a purse surprise them!!
