Free Purse Pattern: Noriko Handbag
Lazies, Just in time for some Lazy holiday sewing, the free Noriko Handbag pattern is my year-end gift to you! You might remember Noriko, she appeared in a magazine a while back. Since then, I’ve received tons of emails asking to make her available as a Lazy Girl Designs pattern. Here she is!

Noriko Handbag with button closure and beaded tassel.

My concept for the Noriko Handbag design was to utilize one pattern piece for the body of the bag. The cover and lining are composed of four identical pieces, which meet at the bottom and come to a soft point. I took my inspiration for Noriko from a football, a pumpkin and a teardrop.
I used one fabric for the four cover pieces. Just for fun I used purple and green fabrics for the lining, two panels in each color. Use lots of fabrics for a scrappy look.

This is a nice view of how the sides tuck in.

The gentle curve at the seams creates a stable base, allowing the bag to sit upright when resting. The sides of the bags can be tucked in to nestle into the bag, allowing it to pack flat when not in use. This is a simple, delicate bag, named after my interpreter for two business trips to Japan in recent years.

This is a nice view of how the sides tuck in,
allowing the bag to lie flat when not in use.

Thanks SEW much, Joan for the free pattern. You are the best.
Oh Joan – what a wonderful wonderful gift you have just given us all. Although I have never made Noriko – she always reminds me of my time living in Japan, and is actually one of my favorites….and if she held as much as Miranda – I would stitch her up in a heartbeat!
Thanks – and have a super Merry Christmas!!!
What fun. And once again, your generosity exceeds your creativity. Thanx so much. I have just the recipient for this one. This year I was blessed with 3 new grandchildren, one a precious girl who love girly things. This one if for her. Then perhaps next she and I can make another one together. Merry Christmas and here’s to all who keep the true spirit of the holiday alive and all sewn up. Love to all Lazies. Christie
How generous of you! Thanks so much!

I remember having to hunt down and buy the magazine on Ebay to get this pattern a while back. Thanks for posting this on your blog now and bringing it back to remembrance!
Now with Christmas just a few weeks away and having to be very frugal this year, I know I’ll be making these for several women and young ladies I know that will enjoy this lovely bag. I’ll be putting my large fabric stash to good use this year!
Thanks Joan!
Wow, Joan…what a lovely surprise to find this in this morning’s email. Thank you, thank you! This is a gorgeous purse and I can see it in all kinds of fabrics and colorways. I made quite a few of your free tote bags last Christmas and I intend on making these this Christmas. Your patterns are the best……
All the best to you and yours!
Merry Christmas.
Sandy in snowy Ohio.
Thank you for the wonderful patttern! The fabric you used on the outside is beautiful!
Blessings to you!

Joan-this is a great pattern and I love that you named it for Noriko! Jeanne and I so enjoyed her company and help while in Tokyo. She was everything you had described to us before we made the trip. It’s sweet to see such a classic Japanese design with such great fabric and button-another wonderful treat from you! Merry Christmas!
Oh thank you – I love reading your blogs and feel so connected to you. You inspire me and help me. Blessings to you.
THANK YOU, Joan! That is a fabulous gift to us. Where did you get that stunning fabric?
Thank you!
I’m sooo happy that this is a free pattern! I first asked you about it well over a year ago, when you first showed the purse, and when would it be available. THANKS SO MUCH!
Dear Joan, love the purse, but when I clicked on to get the pattern, I just got a blank page. I really want this pattern. It is so unique & beautiful. Please help! Thanks sew much!
Sandie
Hi Sandra,
The PDF might take a little bit of time to download. Try it again and see if that takes care of the issue.
What an exciting purse! I am anxious to make it! Thank you….Merry Christmas.
Thank you Joan. I never did get the original pattern in the magazine so this was a wonderful gift. I spent this past rainy weekend sewing so I’m ahead of schedule on my Christmas projects and will be able to find time to stitch up a Noriko or two for some special gifts.
I love your patterns and have purchased several of them. Thanks so much for giving us this delightful one – I can’t wait to hunt through my stash and make up a couple for Christmas gifts!
Thank you ever so much for the free hand bag pattern, I look forward to sewing a personal bag with my choice of fabric!!! Jean in TN
Thank YOu for your generousity Joan, May your Holidays be Blessed and Wonderful!!!
Dear Joan,
Thanks for sending it to me. I just printed it out. I’m anxious to make it. I’m doing a craft show this coming Saturday. Maybe I’ll get one made for that. It’s really different than anything I’ve seen before. Merry Christmas & thanks a bunch. You are the best!!!!!!!!!
Sandie
Joan, how ever can we thank you?! This bag is fantastic. I will have to visit my local fabric store and see what fabrics will do this justice!!
Claudia
It is such a beautiful and unique bag, thank you for sharing! Tiffany
I’m confused. The first photo shows the bag ‘full’ and ‘fat’ and the tassel looks like it has drawn up the bag for that shape? The last photo shows it laying flat after you tuck in the sides, for storage. Is there a step that I am overlooking? I have read the directions several times. I can’t figure out how the bag can look like the first photo when I put items inside. Won’t the weight just go to the bottom and it will look like the bottom photo? Yes, its Monday after a holiday – Perhaps all my brain matter isn’t working yet….
But I sure thank you for the free pattern!
Hi Nancy,
The more you put in Noriko, the more she’ll spread out at the bottom. Due
to her shape, everything heads south and huddles together inside the bag.
That will determine how she hangs and how she looks.
Thank you Joan, happy holidays to you and yours
Joan: Thank you so much for the lovely free pattern. I admired this when you first
showed it to us, and love it now. I recall that you mentioned the fabic in one of the
blogs, but can’t seem to find it. It is such a beautiful fabic and design, and I think
I would like to see if I can find something like it, so if you have any info, it is much
appreciated. Thank you again, for a great Christmas gift. My first this season!
Joan you are a blessing!!! And you have the biggest heart!!
Thank you so much for the wonderful gift of the pattern I own
over 10 of your patterns and have such fun making them and giving
them away. I look forward to your blog each week and you are
such a sweetheart you keep my creative juices flowing with all your
ideas. May God Bless you mightly!
Donna from Texas
The Noriko purse looks darling. Can’t wait to make one. Thank you for sending it to us.

Hi Joan
Your blog usually arrives late Monday night or early Tuesday morning here in Australia. I’ve got up this morning to find this wonderful bag pattern that I am just going to have to make for a couple of my friends for Christmas. I’ve already made and take to the UK for my daughters Miranda bags – including one for my first grandchild Lily made out of scraps from her quilt I made. Her mum is going to use it as a nappy bag.
I love all of the designs that you have and have probably bought most of them–thank you for your great patterns. And now you give us a free pattern-how gracious and sweet you are. thank you for the early Christmas present!! I only hope that your holidays and Christmas are just wonderful-you deserve the best.
Thanks for the pattern; I’ll be making these for my daughters-in-law!
Thank you for the pattern.
Thank you so much for the lovely pattern. It’s beautiful
I think this would be adorable using ‘crazy quilted’ fabric…..I will love shopping for and finding the perfect fancy button. What a delightful gift idea. Thanks for sharing….you lazy thing, you!! My daughters will benefit from your genorisity…only 23 more sewing days until Christmas.
WOW! Thank you so much! What a great gift! Now I just need to find some dynamic fabric. I have never shopped for fabric at quilt shops but I’ve been thinking I need to start. Nothing against the craft stores or fabric shops, just think that maybe quality and variety would be better.
Well listen to me go on and on. Just wrote to say thank you! and Happy Holidays!
Lynn
Awesome. I love your fabric. Thanks for such a nice Christmas gift.
Namaste Joan,
At this very moment I was wondering what to give my son’s girlfriend for Christmas. We will meet for the first time over the holidays and i wanted to give her something special. You have given me a wonderful project to create for her. Thank you and may your holidays be blessed.
Mardi
Thank you so much for your wonderful free pattern. I have already made one of your pocketbooks and they are so well designed and your patterns are easy to follow. I hope to find time to make this bag as well.
Happy Holidays,
The bag is simply adorable, almost as if it has a chinese design it would go perfectly with a chinese style evening dress. Thanks for the design
Merry Christmas from Australia!
Your beautiful pattern will make a couple of “hard-to-find-gifts-for” friends very happy. Thank you so much.
thank you
shlaom to you and yours

Oh, my. This is absolutely beautiful. And perfect.
And it SO doesn’t fit into my pre-holiday creating freak-out. But everything’s going on hold until I can make one of these beauties!
thank you so much; i’ve wanted this pattern for a very long time …
merry christmas, joan ….

This is STUNNING, I love it! I’ll be linking.
Thank you sew much for the lovely gift. I have loved the bag since I first saw it and have been unable to get the magazine! I have some beautiful oriental silk brocade cuts that have been waiting for the perfect bag and now, here it is! I will make one for my friend, Yuki, who lives in Okinawa and, of course, one for myself!
Thank you so much for sharing this pattern. I ran right out and bought some fabric! It’s turning out very well, all I need to do is add the button. What a great gift. You rock!
Thank you Joan for such a lovely pattern. I cannot wait to make her up.
Hi…thanks so much for the beautiful pattern!!
Sue
this bag is perfect for anyone; my daughter and daughter-in-law will be getting one, as well as myself!! I love the fabric; where did you find it?
what a beautiful purse ! . I love your blog.
Thank you for your generosity! I have a friend that this will be perfect for! I’m really scaling back on gifts this year since I lost my job and I can use some fabrics from my stash for this. BTW, I found this link through TipNut.com.
Thank you! How very cool. Great pattern and tutorial.
Thank you so much this is so beautiful complimented by gorgeous fabric.
Thank you so much for the pattern. I have three female-type divaswho will love different versions of this bag. Nehmah
Thank you for the pattern. The bag is beautiful.
Thanks for the pattern…I made two and found threading the beads on the ribbon to be the most difficult part!
How would this purse work as a reversible? It would appear the pattern could lend itself to this feature…….
Hi Debbie,
I would work very well as a reversible with a little attention to how you close the opening in the side seam and add a button on the lining.
Joan
Thank you! You have motivated this Lazy Girl to sew. Something I haven’t done in a long time. I recently lined a shadow box with royal blue velvet. I saved the leftover velvet from that project and knowing that I wanted to use it, but how? You have answered my question with the Noriko Handbag. I will line it with some lovely fabric and I am debating using satiny cord for the handles, in royal blue or a color to compliment the lining. I am thinking about making the tassel out of strands of tiny glass beads (not sure of the color yet), with the ends accented with grey fresh water pearls. The button will be either a covered button in the velvet or the lining fabric,or maybe mother of pearl… who knows? I am just going to listen to my muse and make a lovely evening bag. I wonder if I could make a knot type of button like the one used in a frog closure out of a string of glass beads to compliment the tassel? Girl, you are getting me into all sorts of good trouble with myself!
Thanks again!
Wow! I’m not much on making handbags yet, but this is one I’d definitely try! I really love the shape of it! Lots different than any I’ve seen. Thanks so much for the pattern!
Thank you so much. What a nice gift for this time of year. Two tie silk bundles are on the way. Perhaps there will be some wonderful fabrics to use for this bag.
HI
Did you try this in leather? If the fabric is stiffer does it still behave properly on the bottom?
Thanks,
Alex
Joan, thank you for such a lovely pattern. I think my niece will love this one.
Well Joan, I had to sit down and make one of these last night. Your instructions were great and I was able to complete it in about 3 hours. I am not great with sewing curves so I took my time and it was very easy with your pattern and instructions. Thanks again for the pattern. I posted pictures on my blog if you would like to have a look.
Thanks for the pattern Joan – I enjoy your blog very much
I make a lot of bags and would like to make this one.

Love it! Made 3 from leftovers from McKenna Ryans Glacial Lights fabrics: they will be gifts for my girlfriends this Christmas. I’m adding seeds, chocolate covered sunflower seeds and a cutting from a plant for them to grow. They’re “green” X-Mas gift’s!
Dear Joan,
You are something else! Thanks for sharing this lovely little bag. I had such fun sewing it up and it turned out so cute! God bless you and may He continue to bless you with all kinds of great ideas…..Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family!
P.S. I am a tonal scrap quilter so i think that this would look very fun if all the sides were a different fabric.
Thank you. I love the bag and am excited to show it to the quilting class that I teach. I think it will be scheduled as an upcoming class.

Hi Joan,
I love this purse, it so fun and easy and charming. I added pockets inside by cutting the pattern in half and placing the top of the pocket on the fold of a contrasting fabric. Then I laid the pockets on the lining and sew them in when putting the lining pieces together.
It creates four little, but usable pockets and is just plain sweet.
Thanks for the patterns,
Mardi
Thanks a bunch, this is really cute , Carol B
Thank you so much!! I can’t wait to try this fantastic pattern!
Thank you so much for the beautiful pattern! I have made two so far and they are one of the easiest bags to make! I also added pockets inside and found the cutest button. I made a hard template of the pattern as I know I will be making this one over and over again. Great way to use up some excess/left over material that you have. Especially when you don’t have any more coordinating material.
Take Care…
Joan, I just love the fabric you chose and appreciate the inspiration to make this darling purse.
I have been studying the pattern and ready to begin, keep in mind that I am a beginner.
I don’t understand the attaching of the tassel, that’s the cutest part but I don’t follow the wording of the directions. Can you clearify at all?
Is it : after the purse is all finished and turned right side out, you stick your needle up through the bottom of the entire purse and attach?
Any advice greatly appreciated.
Joan, thanks so much for the Noriko bag pattern. Have made two, one cotton, one brocade. Where can I post pix??
Absolutely beautiful & yet so doable!! Just what I’ve been looking for to use my Japanese fabrics! Thanks big time!

Hi Joan, thank you so much for this pattern.. I am an 18 year old artist and yesterday i discovered the post from 2006 saying that the pattern was going to be in the asian fabrics magasine… and i printed out every view and have been trying to figure out how the pieces would be shaped… i figured out a pretty closeapproximation and am still in the process of figuring out the beaded tie at the bottom… i have the pieces all cut out as of today and tomarro plan to start sewing… then i happened to be cruising around youre site and found this more recent post on the same bag… now im going tobe able to tell how close i came to figuring it out.
thanks so much for putting up the pattern. keep up the amazing work, ive found many amazing bags on here. love it.
