Margo on Safari!
by admin — 17 Comments » Lazies, My friend Shelly Stokes, owner of Cedar Canyon Textiles, made a ‘Safari’ themed Margo Handbag using her fabric Shiva Paintstiks and new stencil technique from her Design Magic book. The safari design is a paint embellishment using simple square stencils. Safari Margo was on display in Shelly’s booth at Market and it is even more fabulous in person.

Shelly devised a simple technique using a set of two square stencils to create a repeat design over a large (or small) piece of fabric. The stencils are a positive and negative for the same design. Much like a doughnut and doughnut hole, one stencil is the doughnut and the other is the hole. In this case, one is the stripe and the other is the space between the stripes which happen to be different stripes. The stripes in the photos below are the same design. The stripes that are dark in the first stencil are light in the second stencil.

Shelly used grape colored paint on yellow/orange fabric below.

You can flip the stencils over to the backside to create a mirror image, too. To create an overall design, simply flip and paint, alternating stencils as you go. Easy and beautiful! You can use the stencils for an overall design or do smaller pieces and trim for individual blocks and work them into your projects.

wow!! i already liked Margo…now i LOVE HER!!
I had so much fun with Margo at Quilt Market. I had the opportunity to show people how easy it is to put in the zipper. I learned that people are really frightened of the word “zipper.” Margo is very upscale, her zipper is recessed, but the pattern and photos are so clear and sew easy, that even beginners can make a beautiful bag. This pattern, like all LG patterns is great. My only regret was that I didn’t get to meet Joan in person.

Love Margo! It was easy and it looks great! I would like to make it just a tad bigger. I think the next one I make I will cut the pieces about an inch bigger all the way around. Keep those designs coming!
Just got pattern yesterday, love this idea.
That is such a striking bag! I had to go and order the first book over at Sew Thankfull after seeing it. I am excited to get mine finish but life has turned me into a bathroom cleaner today!!! Maybe this weekend!

I just finished my first Miranda for a graduation gift … Horse fabric for a future veterinarian! Hope she loves it as much as I do. Now I’m working on the Mini Miranda and am waiting for Margo and Wonder Wallet to arrive.
My husband is really getting into this as well, when he read you live in Westerville he said, small world, you need to write her and send a picture of your new bag!

I just finished my first Margo bag and I love it. My only suggestion would be to not mark the stitching lines on the back of the bag until you have ironed the fusible onto it.
I *love* these fabrics for the Margo. I would totally carry that one!!!
